Software Flex Fuel E85
Automatic bioethanol conversion
Convert any compatible petrol vehicle to E85 bioethanol directly through ECU reprogramming. No plug-in box, no waiting, file modified in seconds.
What is software-based E85 conversion?
Flex Fuel E85 conversion is the reprogramming of the engine ECU to allow running on E85 bioethanol (85% ethanol + 15% petrol) in addition to regular unleaded. This modification is made directly inside the original ECU, without installing any additional hardware box.
Ethanol has roughly 30% lower calorific value than petrol: to maintain the same air/fuel ratio, the ECU must inject more fuel. The remap modifies injection maps and lambda corrections to handle this difference automatically.
What MapX-R Flash modifies for E85 conversion
- Injection time maps (increased to compensate calorific value)
- Lambda / AFR maps (target ratio adjusted to 9.0 vs 14.7)
- Ignition advance (optimised for ethanol's higher octane rating)
- Short-term and long-term fuel trims (STFT, LTFT)
- Cold start strategy (extended injection time for ethanol's lower volatility)
- Compatibility with any blend between 100% petrol and 100% E85
Real-world fuel savings
In most European countries, E85 costs 40-60% less than regular unleaded at the pump. Even with 25-30% higher fuel consumption, per-kilometre savings are substantial:
For a workshop, E85 conversion is a powerful commercial argument for private customers and fleets — the modification typically pays for itself within 6 months on most use cases.
ECU remap vs E85 plug-in box
Two solutions exist for running on E85. Here is why ECU reprogramming is technically superior:
E85 plug-in box
- Parallel connection to injectors
- Limited precision (flat estimation)
- Can throw off long-term fuel trims (LTFT)
- Risk of injector wear over time
- Added hardware prone to failure
- Possible engine light on Euro 6 vehicles
MapX-R Flash remap
- Direct modification of original ECU
- Maximum precision via calibration maps
- Lambda corrections perfectly handled
- No added hardware, no extra wiring
- No engine light, no OBD anomalies
- Stock revert possible at any time

How to convert a vehicle to E85 in 4 steps
Read the original file
Read the ECU file with your master tool: Autotuner, KESS, KTag, CMD, bFlash, Magic Motorsport.
Load into MapX-R Flash
Open the software, select the Tuning module, load your ORIGINAL file.
Select Flex Fuel E85
Tick Flex Fuel E85 (combinable with Stage 1, DPF OFF, EGR OFF). Click Apply.
Download and flash
The modified file is generated in seconds. Reflash the ECU with your tool.
Technical advantages of MapX-R Flash for E85
Validated calibrations
Maps created and validated by specialised engineers, tested on real vehicles across all petrol / E85 blend ratios.
Full Flex Fuel compatibility
The modified file automatically handles any blend between 100% petrol and 100% E85. No refuelling constraints.
Stage 1 + E85 combo
E85's high octane (105) allows pushing beyond standard petrol Stage 1 limits by combining both modules.
Responsive support
Integrated ticket system, response in under 2 hours for all plans.
Frequently asked questions about software E85 conversion
Are all petrol vehicles E85 compatible?
Virtually all post-2001 petrol vehicles are compatible. Exceptions concern a few engines with very old indirect injection or some first-generation FSI with sensitive fuel rails. MapX-R Flash automatically flags incompatible models.
Does E85 conversion damage the engine?
No, on compatible vehicles. Ethanol has higher octane rating (105 vs 95) and burns cooler, which is actually beneficial. On pre-2001 vehicles or older indirect injection, some seals may need preventive replacement.
What is the real fuel consumption increase?
Expect 25-30% higher consumption. A car using 7L/100km on regular petrol will use about 9L/100km on pure E85. Despite this, per-kilometre cost is 35-45% lower thanks to E85's much cheaper price at the pump.
Do other mechanical modifications need to be done?
On most recent vehicles (post-2005), no hardware modification is required. On older vehicles, preventive replacement of fuel pump seals and fuel lines is recommended. Cold starts below 0°C may require minor adjustment.
Is E85 conversion legal?
Legality varies by country. In France, software E85 conversion has been fully legal since November 2017 (must be declared on the vehicle registration via certified installer). Check local regulations in your country.
Can you revert to 100% petrol after conversion?
Yes, instantly and without any intervention. The MapX-R Flash modified file automatically handles any blend between 100% petrol and 100% E85. You can switch between fuels freely depending on available stations.
